I'm researching my family tree and have learnt that my great great grandfather Edward Broughton was born in Charleston South Carolina in approximately 1835. His occupation was a mariner and he met and married my great great grandmother in Liverpool England. I am assuming he worked on ships which traded in cotton. Their marriage certificate (1850s) lists his father, also Edward Broughton, as being a planter and deceased. From my research it would appear that the Broughtons were a very "considerable" family in South Carolina during the 1700-1800s, but I can't make any connection with them at all. I do know that my great great grandfather was illiterate as he signed the marriage certificate with an "X". I am at a bit of a loose end now and just wondered if there was anyone who could help?
